First Baptist Church of Overland Park seeks to Radiate God’s Love in our community and throughout the Kansas City area.
Strengthening Families Program – Overland Park
In the fall of 2013 we hosted our first 14-week round of SFP-OP which has been a community partnership of First Baptist Church, Regional Prevention Center of Johnson County Mental Health, Overland Park Police Department, Johnson County Department of Corrections, and Johnson County Court Services. This is is an evidence-based prevention program for parents and children ages 3-5, 6-11 and 12-16 in higher risk families. SFP consists of parenting skills, children’s life skills, and family skills training courses taught together in fourteen 2-hours group sessions preceded by a meal that includes informal family practice time and group leader coaching.
First Baptist Church serves as the host site of SFP-OP. We see our role to be one of radical hospitality in which we open our church doors to create a community of the participants, facilitators, and volunteers.
We are currently in the second round of Strengthening Families Program in Overland Park and we are excited to be working with a great cohort and wonderful group of facilitators!
Sylvan Grove Neighborhood Association
First Baptist Church is proud to serve as the coordinator of the Sylvan Grove Neighborhood Association. In this capacity we work to build community with in our neighborhood through bi-monthly gatherings and community parties such as the National Night Out.
Caring for Kids Network – Partner with Brookridge Elementary School
We also love serving as part of a network of other churches and businesses in our area to serve the needs of Brookridge Elementary School, a Title I school. All of these community partners are continuing to work to discover how we might best serve the needs of the administration, teachers, students, and parents of this school. One of our most recent ministry activities was to send hand-written thank you notes and an apple to each teacher.
Bethel Neighborhood Center
On the third Friday of each month at 5:30pm, we supply and serve a meal to Bethel’s church community. Then we have the opportunity to lead that community in worship. Won’t you join us!
